If you and your kids have a bad case of cabin fever, then it’s time to join us as we celebrate our Minnesota existence! The 13th Annual Frost Fest will take place on Friday, January 29 at Pearl Park from 6-8 pm. Kids Dance DJ will spin some hip and groovy kids’ music while their partners in dance do some wild moves.

Some additional activities will include coin medallion hunt (bring your flashlights and warm winter gear!) door prize drawings, face painting, the cup cake walk, indoor games, craft creations, and WII competitions. Don’t worry about making dinner before you get the kids out of the house, because food concessions will be available for purchase. This fantastically fun event is brought to you by the volunteers and staff of Pearl Park, the Pearl Improvement and Recreation Council and the Hale, Page, and Diamond Lake Community Association.

The jobs are temporary and will start sometime between January and March and should continue into June. The jobs pay about $14 to $18 an hour depending on the level of the position for which someone is hired. The Census wants to hire people who live in the neighborhoods to work in the neighborhoods. Persons who are bilingual or multi-lingual are particularly desired to work in neighborhoods where their second language would likely be encountered. A car would be necessary. You must be able to commit to a 40-hour week of paid training.

For further information on Census jobs including a practice test, please go to the website:

www.2010censusjobs.gov

To be considered for hiring, please call toll free to 1-866-861-2010 and ask for an appointment at a “testing session.” If you are also interested in a supervisory position, then also request an appointment for the “supervisor test.”

Low-Interest Revolving Loan

HPDL offers very low interest loans – at 3% – for both single family and owners of multiple unit properties in the neighborhood. Participants’ income cannot exceed 150% of the area median income. Eligible improvements include corrections of housing code violations, energy efficiency improvements, sound insulation improvements, and improvement of the physical condition of the property to enhance livability. Recreational or luxury improvements are not eligible. The term of the loans is 5 years and can range from $500 – 5,000.

Emergency Deferred Loan

What happens to low-income folks whose furnace dies in the middle of winter or whose roof is leaking? This program hopes to address such problems. If the house may be uninhabitable, extremely dangerous or capable of causing severe health problems, and if the resident’s income does not exceed 50% of the area median income, then this program may be able to help. Loans are forgivable if resident stays in home for five years. Maximum loan size is $5,000.

Accessibility Deferred Loan

Residents with a long-term disability and who lack the resources to make accessibility improvements to their homes may apply for this forgivable loan program. Income limit is 110% of the area median income and the minimum loan size is $2,000. The maximum loan is $7,500, but if the resident’s disability was incurred while in the United States Armed Forces, that resident may apply for a loan up to $15,000. Many state and county programs may apply for home accessibility improvements, so residents are encouraged to pursue these sources first or in conjunction with an HPDL loan. Loans are forgivable after 7 years if the resident retains ownership of the property for the duration of that time. Examples of accessibility improvements are: widening doorways, installing automatic door openers, lowering counters, or exterior modifications such as installing ramps and stair lifts.

For more information about these Programs, call the Greater Metropolitan Housing Corporation at (612) 722-7141.

The 18th Annual Picnic in the Park was a great success, and a very special event for our community. We would like to extend a huge “thank you” to all of our sponsors— Kowalski’s, Fat Lorenzo’s, Mike’s Corner Store, and PIRC, for helping to make the event a wonderful evening of fun and community togetherness for the Hale Page Diamond Lake Neighborhood.

The weather was picture perfect—despite a few sprinkles here and there—and everyone brought their appetites! The music was loud and lively, and kept folks tapping their toes. Jo Jo, the balloon guy, was a big hit with the kids.

Neighborhood businesses, nonprofits of all kinds, and churches shared information with picnic-goers. Be sure to join us next year for the 19th Annual Picnic in the Park!

Some volunteer needs only require a few hours each quarter, yet these hours are vital to carrying out the mission of the HPDL Community Association. To get involved, please see below for areas in which we are seeking the expertise we know exists in our community.

Create and distribute event publicity

Obtain supplies and prizes

Setup and tear down on the day of the events

Crime Prevention and Community Safety Committee

This committee is responsible for promoting and supporting block club development in the neighborhood and providing information and education to residents and business owners in order to promote personal and property safety.	The committee currently meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. Committee members are also involved in planning and organizing a community meeting in March and providing information at other events throughout the year.

Environment Committee
